Abingdon United Women took a big step towards FA Women's National League survival yesterday afternoon, after a sensational comeback against Worthing in the Division One South West.
United Head Coach Chris Smith named an unchanged starting eleven on the back of a positive display against league champions AFC Bournemouth. Mimi Hodges was also back in the side, adding to the substitutes.
Worthing were on top early on. Tierney Scott cut inside from the left, but saw her effort go over the bar. United responded well, and nearly went ahead. A smart ball through by Holly Sellwood found Mollie Dyer, who could only find the crossbar.
It was the visitors who went ahead in the 13th minute of the game. Scott found space yet again after cutting in from the left, finding the back of the net in off the crossbar, seeing The Rebels take the advantage in the game.
A response was needed from Smith's side, which is what played out. Dyer had an effort saved, before Molly Lygo fired a shot over. An effort from a corner kick was also tipped over by Worthing goalkeeper Lauren Dolbear, meaning the visitors went into the break ahead.
Despite a quiet start to the second half, it was The Yellows on top. A dangerous cross in from the right by Charlotte Deeley found Lauren May, who could only glance her header wide.
Caitlin Crierie had to be alert to ensure Worthing could not kill the game off. Sophie Humphrey unleashed from distance, but Crierie got down well to her right to deny a second.
Changes were made by Abingdon. Anais Harris-Beechers, Poppy Wannell and Mimi Hodges were all introduced to the game, and what followed could prove to be a vital ten minutes in our campaign.
Dyer's header found the bottom left corner to bring the game level for United in the 88th minute, making it five in an Abingdon shirt for our no.9 since signing for the club.
Cue pandemonium at The Northcourt just minutes later. With three minutes of stoppage time played, a ball in from Wannell found Lygo on the rebound, who tapped home to give United a massive three points.
Our Player of the Match was skipper, Nell Boxall, after a battling display in the middle of the park. We face Bridgwater United next in the FAWNL, back at The Northcourt, in a 2pm kickoff on March 30th.
We would also like to say a massive thank you to Haddenham U10's Girls, who were our mascots for the day!
