Monahan Way, Carterton was the venue for Abingdon's fifth game of the season. After moving to the top of the Thames Valley Division One last week United knew the ball was in their court to keep them there with a game in hand.
With Melissa Farrow, Alex Baker and Jane Younger all still on the injury list, Anne Campbell unavailable and the clearance for Luise Lebfromm still not complete and Becci Bostock rested. The subs available to Abingdon fell to four as goalkeeper Sophie Kirby had to pull out due to illness meaning captain Abbie Smith would take the gloves for the first half at least.
Manager Adam Wood said during the week that he wanted a strong start and for the team to be consistent over the full 90 minutes. Sunday's game provided just that.
United started strong maintaining possession well for the first few minutes before Kiera Isaac broke through after a Kelly Talbot pass and Isaac slotted home, 1-0.
It took just over a minute before Amy Pipe took advantage of a scramble in the box before finally beating the Carterton number one to make it 2-0.
Abingdon played a great passing game and created more chances through Heather Young, Pipe, Ethne Rothery and Isaac. However the Carterton keeper pulled off a number of good saves to keep the visitors at bay.
After the half time whistle Abingdon started strongly again as Emma Poffley worked hard down the left hand side before winning United a corner on the 48th minute. The resulting corner, whipped in by Amy Chivers found Steph Carrick as she powered her header into the net to make it 3-0.
Some great football by Abingdon created a couple more chances including an efforts from Abbie Smith (swapped goalkeeping duties with Ethne Rothery at half time), Charmaine White and Isaac.
Player of the match Amy Pipe made it 4-0 on the 68th minute and then 5-0 on the 85th to complete her hat trick.
Kiera Isaac wrapped up proceedings with her second goal of the game on the 88th minute as she finished off a Charmaine White assist.
It was great to see a complete 90 minute performance from Abingdon as they now head into a break away from league action as they take on Ascot United Development at home in the Berks and Bucks County Cup next week.
Wood had this to say after the game, "A much improved performance from the ladies, we were consistent throughout and played well against a Carterton side who were well drilled and looked resilient. But we moved the ball well and were very patient in our build up play. We expect a few teams will set up that way this season with our current record however it does give us more practice around how to attack that. It was great to see Kizz and Pipey both scoring goals on their return. Bit gutted and annoyed that we were unable to use Luise (Lebfromm) today due to, in my opinion, a lapse in the process for international clearance. That aside we had Sophie unable to play today and fair play to Abbie and Ethne for filling in and keeping our clean sheet record going".
