Match Preview: Abingdon United vs Worthing

Abingdon United WFC21 Mar - 18:08

The Yellows are at the last stretch of the season, and this weekend, they have another difficult game at home against Worthing.

Match Preview written by Jamie Stonehouse.

United are back at The Northcourt this weekend with a challenging fixture ahead of the team, as they welcome Worthing in a 2pm kickoff in the FA Women's National League Division One South West.

This is one of the three last home games of the season for Abingdon, with ambitions to finish it on a high.

After a well-battled 2-0 loss against league leaders Bournemouth, Abingdon will want to continue that type of performance against a very strong Worthing side. With both goals being scored in the second half, United managed to keep the cherries at bay for the whole of the first half, which has been a struggle for many teams this season.

This is the third time the Yellows are facing Worthing this season as both games United have lost, with the first one being in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup with a heavy defeat at home, but the second result was a far better performance for Abingdon, however were still defeated 2-1 away from home.

The Yellows will be looking to put things right against The Rebels, and what better way to do it than at The Northcourt.

Pre-Match: Chris Smith and Kara Howes

United come into these last few games with safety in their hands, sitting one point above the dotted line with a game in hand.

However, the team aren't taking anything for granted, and United defender Kara Howes believes the group are determined to finish the job.

She said: "It makes you work harder as a player. It makes you want the game more and to perform well.

"We've come together more as a team, and I think that's shown over the last couple of games. We've got a few wins under our belt and put pressure on teams that are sitting top of the league, and I think going into Sunday it's going to be good for us."

Head Coach Chris Smith is looking for his squad to take recent performances into the run in, after a well-battled display last time out against AFC Bournemouth.

Smith explained: "Coming into the last four games there's a lot we can take from the last couple of months.

"The camaraderie, the togetherness, the team, has been outstanding.

"Five weeks ago we asked them, who actually wanted to play for Abingdon, and what it meant to them, and I think you can see that there are people here who want to go on and play for this club and keep them in this league."
