On Friday, October 4th, Abingdon United hosted a truly unforgettable night of football and community spirit at The Northcourt, as we faced off against Wantage Town in a Challenge Cup fixture that will be remembered for more than just the action on the pitch.
With a record-breaking attendance of 1,567 supporters, the atmosphere was electric, as fans, families, and friends came together to honour the memory of Jack Badger. All proceeds from the match were generously donated to support Jack's young daughter, continuing the incredible efforts of friends, the local community, and the wider football family.
The evening began with a heartfelt minute of silence, as players, staff, and fans united in reflection. In the 24th minute, a rousing minute of applause echoed around the ground, symbolising the community’s love and respect for Jack and his family.
The match itself was a thrilling contest, with Abingdon United securing a 3-2 victory against Wantage Town in a hard-fought battle. However, the night was about much more than the result. Every aspect of the event was made possible by the dedication of our volunteers, who worked tirelessly to ensure the evening ran smoothly and was a fitting tribute to Jack.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Wantage Town and the Hellenic League for their cooperation in relocating the fixture, and to everyone who came out to show their support. This night was a testament to the power of football in bringing communities together in times of both joy and sorrow.
Together, we honoured the memory of a remarkable man, and in doing so, showed the strength of our community. Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible.
